W 1990 roku po upadku rządu komunistycznego Rumunia przyjęła nowy hymn - "Desteaptate, Romane", który używany był także przez pewien czas przez Mołdowię. Pieśń tą napisano podczas rewolucji w 1848 roku, i używana była przez Rumunów w ich walce o wolność, zarówno w walce przeciwko nazistom w 1944 roku jak i współcześnie (śpiewano ją w 1989 roku po tym jak obalono w kraju komunizm), dlatego pieśń tą wybrano na narodowy hymn Rumunii.
